De Smet. Delightfully Different.
There’s nothing quite like a day in De Smet. Here, the past mingles with the future and the spirit of adventure is alive and well. Our colorful South Dakota community is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, artists, history buffs, theater lovers, boutique shoppers and everything in between. With all the charm of a modern small town combined with spectacular sunsets, a storybook history and world-class hunting and fishing, there really is something delightfully different about De Smet. We can’t wait to meet you here!
Laura Ingalls Wilder brought De Smet to life with her series of Little House on the Prairie books, vividly providing a historical background for the town she and her family called home over 100 years ago. Since then, thousands of people have created their own memorable stories in and around De Smet. Our pioneer heritage offers one-of-a-kind experiences for people of all ages. There is just something delightfully different about walking through Laura's home and school, 'attending class' in a one room schoolhouse, making your own corn cob doll or watching a live performance of your favorite Little House stories in a beautiful outdoor theater.
De Smet is located 55 miles north of Interstate 90 and about 45 miles west of Interstate 29 on the northeast side of South Dakota, away from the hustle and bustle and close enough to perfect. Our first-rate Event Center is perfect for concerts, meetings, and family reunions. Enjoy a 9 hole golf course, museums, library, wonderful city parks, bed & breakfasts, comfortable motels, and great campgrounds.
